You ever go to an ice cream place, and it is really famous for this one really amazing flavor of ice cream, and you try it and it’s like “Wow this is amazing!”. And then you keep going back to have it again and again. Until one day you start getting tired of that flavor and want to try something new. Except in this scenario, that really good flavor is the only flavor they serve. That’s basically this album. The first track is absolutely god-like. It gave me chills listening to the contrast between the dark death doom sections, and the major key atmo sludge / post-metal sections. Really beautiful stuff. The problem is once you’ve heard the first track, you’ve heard the whole album. It really never goes anyway else, and none of the other tracks are as good as the first one, which is also strangely enough the longest track on the album. It almost seems like they reversed the order of the tracks by accident and never bothered to change it back. I also think this album’s score would’ve been helped had they at least at one point in the album mixed the dark and the light instead of alternating between the two.
Overall I think this album would’ve greatly benefited from more variety and more intermixing of the themes. Still really beautiful, I’d definitely recommend it.
